Why have a Federation of Families chapter?

The Federation remains the national leader of uniting, training and preparing parents to leaders in designing Systems of Care for children,.  The Federation promotes that parents are the experts of their children and must be treated as equal partners through the planning and delivery of services for their children. The Federation chapters are parent run chapters and boards.    Today there are other similar groups that address mental health needs of children and the sub categories. e.g. ADHD, etc, However groups such as The National Alliance for Mentally Ill and The Council for Exceptional Children are often dominated by professionals  and educators, or address other populations (e.g. adults) in their agendas.

The former Surgeon General, Dr. David Satcher, stated in the 2000 report "One out of five children exhibits serious mental health needs and behaviors.  Minority youth are disproportionately represented in all of these categories and receive misdirected and inappropriate treatments."
